Grace to Perform These Vows

Friday, May 7, 2010

I'm in Weirton, WV this weekend because my dear friend Chelsy is getting married! I'm so glad to get to experience this weekend with her. I love weddings, and I love marriage. It is HARD - harder than I thought it would be. Probably because I'm more of a sinner than I thought I was (think I am). But God's grace abounds, and it's also SO much fun.

Being around all of this wedding stuff makes me remember my own wedding. It was sweet to hear Chelsy's mom say today that planning hasn't been stressful. My own planning wasn't stressful, either -- I thought it was so much fun! -- and I thank God for His kindness to me in that. I would do it again in a heartbeat! Planning a wedding AND marrying Wesley, that is. :)

So I'm rejoicing in the love of two friends this weekend -- rejoicing in the God who loves us deeply and wholly and gives us grace to love one another as well as Himself -- and I'm remembering my own wedding. As I do, I pray that God will give Chelsy and Jonathan the grace to perform the vows they'll speak this weekend. Here are ours:

I, Wesley
Take you, Beth
To be my wedded wife
I promise to love you
As Christ loved the Church
And gave Himself up for her
I promise to nourish and cherish you
To grant honor unto you
As a fellow heir of God's grace
I will lead you by protecting and providing for you
I will be faithful and loyal to you
In sickness and in health
In sorrow and in joy
In good times and in bad times
So long as we both shall live
Or until the return of the Lord
I promise to trust in my God
For the grace to perform these vows

I, Beth
Take you, Wesley
To be my wedded husband
I promise to love you
As God's Word commands me to love
I acknowledge that you are my head
As Christ is the Head of the Church
I will gladly submit to you
As I submit to the Lord
I will remain faithful to you
Wherever the Lord may lead us
I will respect and support you
In sickness and in health
In sorrow and in joy
In good times and in bad times
So long as we both shall live
Or until the return of the Lord
I promise to trust in my God
For the grace to perform these vows

Those are some vows! Wow. I need so much grace.

I love you, hubs. :)

Haha. I laughed about your "my wedding planning was not stressful at all!" comment. Was someone else inhabiting your body for an entire school year and basically freaking out every bible study about some new wedding detail? If so, we need to find that person because I told them some super secret stuff. The world isn't ready for that yet. :-)

Say something...
